The Civil War provided huge opportunity for women in various different fields including medicine. There was huge need for women to help volunteer in helping the wounded soldiers of the war. The huge numbers of sick and wounded men who needed care during the Civil War exacerbated the lack of organized hospital and medical personal. At the time of the war there wasn't any formal nursing school. In addition with the increase in men going to war, women needed to take the place of men. Women nurses saved life's and helped to get women respected in the military. By the end of the war, the army required one-third of its hospital nurses to be women(Stein).
