Synopsis
Elizabeth Blackwell despite all odds was the first women in America to receive a M.D. She struggled to start her medical career after finally getting accepted into medical college as a joke. As a result of her perseverance she became a pioneer for women in medical careers leaving a legacy that continues to impact women. Elizabeth Blackwell became a pioneer for women by opening the profession to women, by getting into college, receiving her degree and through her many accomplishments afterwards.
I chose Elizabeth Blackwell, the first women doctor in the United States as my topic for the research project because she is an inspiring person who greatly impacted the field of medicine for women. It stood out as a great topic because it fits perfectly with this year’s theme of leadership and legacy in history. Elizabeth Blackwell perfectly fit this theme, as she demonstrates both so well. I enjoyed learning more about her and the many things she did for women and the steps she took to ensure equality.
In conducted by research by collecting information on the topic from any different sources. At first, I found good websites giving brief biographies of her life and got a background. From there I researched more on individual aspects of her life and found sites that went into further detail explaining them. I also looked for pictures of documents, like articles, her diploma and important papers during her life. These helped to get a better understanding and gave some perspective into her life.
I choose to do a website because there was a lot of photos that needed to be included to really enhance the project. There were a ton of pictures of important documents that needed to be included in the project. I felt that the only way to really use these would be a website. I used Weebly to create the website and learned all of its features that it included. The website was the best format for me to display the information and the best way it could be shown.
The topic I picked for my project fits this years theme of Leadership and Legacy in various ways.Elizabeth Blackwell was a pioneer for women in the medical field. She left a strong legacy and changed medicine for women to follow. She demonstrated great leadership in building the way for women in medicine. By being the first women to be granted a M.D. she opened up new opportunities and jobs for women in the medical field. She founded the first medical school for women which resulted in an increase acceptance of women in the field and higher standards in medical schools across the country. She wanted women to have equal opportunities for education and in medicine. Without all the work that she did to help open the profession, women would not be where they are today
