"The earliest women doctors struggles to find patients. Men refused to see them and women were reluctant at first. Only after the success of such ventures as Elizabeth Blackwell's and Marie Zakrezewska's New York Infirmary and Dispensary for Women and Children, founded in 1857... did women patients begin to recognize the benefits of having women physicians.. thus provided more thorough, more compassionate, and more empathetic health care for female patients(Learner)".

This Medal was created by the American Medical Women's Association as a tribute to Elizabeth. It is given to a women physician who was made outstanding contributions to the cause of women in the medical field. The award was initiated in 1949 and is granted annually to a women physician. The criteria is based off of what Elizabeth did herself to help women in medicine.
Criteria: Influenced and made pathways for the role of women in medicine,overcame adversity in medicine, recognized as a leader in many areas and more(AMWA).

Hobart and William Smith College, former Geneva College created an award honoring their former student and pioneer. The award is given to a women whose life exemplifies outstanding service to humanity. She used her talents and skills to aid and benefit others, the recipients are women who have achieved and served. The first award was given in 1958 and since them women from all around the world have been given it("The Blackwell Award"). |
