Born on February 3rd 1821 in Bristol England, she moved to the U.S. at the age of 11 with her family. Deciding on a medical career wasn't easy but once she had, she became determined and made it her goal and life. She was a pioneer in educating and opening the field of medicine to women through getting a degree and her work in New York and London. In New York Blackwell set up a dispensary and infirmary with a medical hospital as well as helping out in the Civil War. In London she got on the British Medical Register, set up a private practice, created the National Health Society as well as becoming a professor. In addition she wrote many books throughout her life on various topics(NWHM).

Elizabeth Blackwell despite all odds was the first women in America to receive a M.D. She struggled to start her medical career after finally getting accepted into medical college as a joke. As a result of her perseverance she became a pioneer for women in medical careers leaving a legacy that continues to impact women. Elizabeth Blackwell became a pioneer for women by opening the profession to women, by getting into college, receiving her degree and through her many accomplishments afterwards.
